The box has to be fan-rated

A standard light-fixture box is not built to hold a 20–40 lb fan that moves. Code requires a box listed for fan support, and in older homes the existing box is almost never rated. We swap in a brace box that spans the joists, then hang the fan from it. This is the single most important step and it is included in our flat rate.

Downrods for tall ceilings

Blades should sit 8–9 feet off the floor. In 10-foot rooms that is a 12-inch downrod; in 12–14 foot Uptown and Garden District parlors it is 24–36 inches. Sloped ceilings in camelbacks need an angled mount. We size the rod on site and balance the blades so there is no wobble.

Our humidity destroys indoor-rated fans outside within a couple of seasons. Covered porches and galleries get damp-rated fans; anywhere rain can reach gets wet-rated. Bathrooms and sunrooms are treated the same way.

Remotes, wall controls and what it costs

We install on existing wiring and switches only, which keeps the job flat-rate at about $55–$165 per fan including the brace box. Remote receivers, wall controls and light-kit setup are done on the same visit. Running new wiring to a room with no fixture is electrician work we refer out.
