New installs, swap-outs & light-to-fan conversions
Replacing an old light fixture with a fan requires more than swapping wires: a standard fixture box is not rated to carry a fan's weight or vibration. We install a UL-listed fan-rated brace box anchored to the joist, then hang, wire and balance the fan. Fan-for-fan replacements typically take 45–60 minutes; a light-to-fan conversion takes 60–90 minutes.
Vaulted, high and outdoor ceilings
New Orleans homes routinely have 10–14 foot ceilings, shotgun-house heights and sloped or vaulted living rooms. We bring the ladders, sloped-ceiling adapters and the correct downrod length so the blades sit roughly 8–9 feet above the floor and at least 18 inches from any wall. For porches, galleries and carports we install damp- or wet-rated fans built for Gulf Coast humidity.
Why fans wobble — and how we fix it
Wobble almost always comes from one of four things: a box that is not fan-rated, a loose mounting bracket, mismatched or warped blades, or an unbalanced blade set. We check each in order, tighten the canopy and bracket, swap or re-seat blades, and finish with a balancing kit. A properly installed fan should run silent on high.
Step-by-step ceiling fan installation process
Step 1: you text a photo of the ceiling, the existing fixture and the switch to 504-222-2969 and we return a free flat-rate quote. Step 2: on arrival we cut power at the breaker and confirm the circuit is dead. Step 3: we remove the old fixture or fan and inspect the box — if it is not a UL-listed fan-rated box, we install a brace box anchored to the joist. Step 4: we select the downrod length for your ceiling height (flush mount under 8 ft, 6-inch rod at 9 ft, 12-inch at 10 ft, 24-inch at 12 ft, 36-inch-plus above that). Step 5: we mount the bracket, wire the fan and light — including a separate wall control or remote receiver if you want independent control. Step 6: we attach blades and the light kit, then run the fan on every speed, balance the blade set, and clean up. Fan-for-fan swaps run 45–60 minutes; light-to-fan conversions run 60–90 minutes.
Ceiling fan pricing and the 10% summer deal
Ceiling fan installation is quoted as a flat rate per fan before we start — never hourly. Three factors set the rate: ceiling height (standard 8–10 ft is the base rate; vaulted, sloped or 12 ft-plus ceilings cost more because of ladder work and downrod fitting), existing wiring (a fan-for-fan replacement on an existing fan-rated box is the least expensive job, while a light-to-fan conversion costs more because a UL-listed brace box is added), and add-ons such as remote receivers, separate wall controls, damp-rated outdoor mounting or haul-away of the old fan. Additional fans installed during the same visit are discounted per fan, and 10% off ceiling fan installs and repairs applies through the summer season.

Frequently asked questions
Does ceiling fan installation include new wiring?
No. We install and replace fans on existing wiring and an existing switch. If a room has no ceiling box or switch and needs a new circuit run, that is licensed electrician work — we will tell you up front so you are not surprised.
How much does ceiling fan installation cost in New Orleans?
HandyHal quotes a flat per-fan rate up front, based on ceiling height, whether a fan-rated box and switched wiring already exist, and add-ons like remotes or outdoor damp-rated mounting. Multiple fans in one visit are discounted, and 10% off applies through the summer. Text a photo to 504-222-2969 for a free quote.
Is it cheaper to replace an existing fan than to add a new one?
Yes. A fan-for-fan replacement on an existing fan-rated box is the least expensive job because the box and wiring are already in place. Converting a light fixture to a fan costs more since we add a UL-listed fan-rated brace box, and a fan in a room with no ceiling fixture costs the most.
Can you install a fan where there's only a light fixture?
Yes. A standard light box is not rated to hold a fan, so we install a UL-listed fan-rated brace box anchored to the joist first, then mount and wire the fan. This conversion usually takes 60–90 minutes.
Do you install fans on high or vaulted ceilings?
Yes. We bring tall ladders, sloped-ceiling adapters and the right downrod length so blades hang about 8–9 feet above the floor on vaulted, sloped and 12-foot-plus ceilings.
What downrod length do I need for my ceiling height?
As a rule of thumb in New Orleans homes: flush mount under 8 feet, a 6-inch downrod at 9 feet, 12-inch at 10 feet, 24-inch at 12 feet, and 36 inches or more above 13 feet — aiming for blades roughly 8–9 feet above the floor. We measure and bring the correct rod.
How long does ceiling fan installation take?
A fan-for-fan replacement takes roughly 45–60 minutes. A new install or a light-to-fan conversion takes 60–90 minutes. Several fans are typically done in one appointment.
Can you fix a ceiling fan that wobbles or hums?
Yes. Wobble is usually a non-rated or loose box, a loose bracket, or unbalanced blades. We diagnose, re-secure the mount and balance the blade set so the fan runs silent.
Do ceiling fans help with New Orleans humidity and cooling costs?
Yes. A correctly sized fan running counter-clockwise in summer creates a wind-chill effect that lets you raise the thermostat several degrees at the same comfort level, which cuts AC runtime during the long Gulf Coast cooling season. Reverse it clockwise on low in winter to push warm air down.
Do you install outdoor or porch ceiling fans?
We install damp- and wet-rated fans on porches, galleries, patios and carports — models built to handle New Orleans humidity and salt air.
Do you install fans in historic Uptown and French Quarter homes?
Yes. Older New Orleans homes often have plaster ceilings, 11–14 foot heights and shallow or unbraced boxes. We add a fan-rated brace box, use the correct anchors for plaster and lath, and fit a longer downrod so the fan hangs at an effective height.
Can you set up the remote or wall switch?
Absolutely — we program remotes, install receivers and wire wall controls, including separate control of the fan and the light kit.
Which areas do you install ceiling fans in?
All of Greater New Orleans, including Metairie, Kenner, Gretna, Harvey, Marrero, Terrytown, Chalmette, Belle Chasse and Westwego — over 700,000 residents across four parishes.
