The installation, step by step

1) You text a photo of each window and the rod you bought (or ask us what to buy). 2) We quote a flat price per rod before the visit. 3) On arrival we measure the frame, mark bracket height and overhang, and identify the wall material with a stud finder and a test probe. 4) We pick the anchor for that wall — stud screws, toggle bolts, plaster anchors or masonry screws. 5) Brackets go up, we set the rod, level it across the room, hang the panels and steam or dress the pleats if requested. 6) We vacuum the dust and haul off the packaging.

Algiers Point: lath-and-plaster and 11-foot ceilings

Algiers Point's 1800s cottages and shotguns have original lath-and-plaster walls that crack if you drive a screw into them blind. We drill a pilot hole through the plaster and lath, then use plaster-specific toggle anchors or hit the studs directly. Tall windows and high ceilings usually call for extra-long or ceiling-mounted rods, and we bring the ladders for them. Expect 25–40 minutes per rod on plaster.

Downtown & Warehouse District: concrete, brick and metal studs

CBD and Warehouse District condos and lofts have poured concrete, exposed brick or metal-stud walls behind drywall. We use a hammer drill with masonry screws or sleeve anchors for concrete and brick, and toggle bolts for metal studs, so a heavy blackout panel never pulls out. Building rules often set quiet hours, so we schedule Downtown installs mid-day. Expect 20–35 minutes per rod.

Frequently asked questions

How much does curtain rod installation cost in New Orleans?

HandyHal charges a flat rate per rod, confirmed before the visit. Standard single rods on drywall are the lowest tier; double rods, ceiling-mounted tracks, bay-window sets and plaster, brick or concrete walls are quoted a step higher. Each additional rod in the same visit is discounted. Text a photo to 504-222-2969 for an exact number.

How long does it take to install a curtain rod?

About 15–20 minutes per rod on drywall, 20–35 minutes on concrete, brick or metal studs (Downtown lofts), and 25–40 minutes on lath-and-plaster (Algiers Point, Garden District). A typical three-bedroom home with 8–10 windows is finished in one 3–4 hour appointment.

What are the steps to install a curtain rod?

Measure the window and mark the bracket height (usually 4–6 inches above the frame) and overhang (3–6 inches past each side), find the studs or identify the wall material, drill pilot holes, set the correct anchor, screw in the brackets, seat the rod, level it, and hang the panels.

How high and how wide should the rod be mounted?

For a taller look, mount brackets 4–6 inches above the frame or halfway to the ceiling, and extend the rod 3–6 inches past each side so the open curtains clear the glass. On Algiers Point windows that reach almost to the ceiling we usually go ceiling-mounted.

Can you install curtain rods on plaster walls in Algiers Point?

Yes. We pilot-drill through the plaster and lath and use plaster-rated toggle anchors or the studs behind, so brackets hold heavy drapes without cracking the wall.

Can you install curtain rods on concrete or brick walls Downtown?

Yes. We use a hammer drill with masonry screws or sleeve anchors for concrete and brick, and toggle bolts in metal-stud drywall, which is standard in CBD and Warehouse District condos.

How soon can you come out?

We usually have same-week openings across New Orleans, including Algiers Point and Downtown, Monday through Saturday. Same-day is sometimes available — call or text 504-222-2969.

Do I buy the rod and curtains or do you?

You choose and buy the rod, brackets and panels so you get the style you want. Send us the link or a photo first and we'll confirm the length, bracket projection and weight rating are right for your window and wall.

Do you hang heavy blackout drapes and double rods?

Yes. We anchor into studs or use heavy-duty toggle anchors rated for the load, so blackout panels, layered sheers and double-rod setups stay up for good.

Can you install blinds, shades and picture frames in the same visit?

Yes — curtain rods, roman and roller shades, faux-wood blinds, art, mirrors and floating shelves are commonly booked together, and every additional item is discounted.

Can you move or re-anchor a rod that pulled out of the wall?

Yes. We patch the old holes, relocate the brackets to a stud or a properly rated anchor, and reinstall the rod level.

Which neighborhoods do you cover for curtain rods?

All of New Orleans — Algiers Point, Downtown and the Warehouse District, Mid-City, Garden District, Lakeview, Uptown, French Quarter, Marigny and Bywater — plus Metairie, Kenner and the Westbank.
