Before you buy a fixture

Measure the existing box and the space: dining chandeliers should be roughly half to two-thirds the table width and hang 30–36 inches above it; vanity bars should be about the width of the mirror; outdoor fixtures should be wet-rated for exposed walls and at least damp-rated under a covered porch. Send us a photo or product link before you order and we will confirm it will work on your existing box and ceiling height.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to have a light fixture installed?

HandyHal charges $55–$165 per fixture in Greater New Orleans. Simple swaps such as flush mounts and single porch lights run $55–$85; vanity bars, pendants and flood or motion lights $85–$125; chandeliers, vaulted-ceiling installs and multi-pendant runs $125–$165. Each additional fixture in the same visit is discounted.

Does the price include new wiring?

No. All light fixture and ceiling fan installs are on existing wiring, an existing box and an existing switch. New circuits, new switch locations and panel work require a licensed electrician.

Do I need an electrician to replace a light fixture?

Not for a like-for-like replacement on an existing box — that is standard handyman work. You need an electrician only when new wiring, a new circuit or panel work is involved.

Can a handyman hang a chandelier?

Yes. Chandeliers under 35 lbs mount to a standard box; heavier chandeliers get a rated support box anchored to the joist. We set the chain so the fixture hangs 30–36 inches above the table.

How high should a pendant hang over a kitchen island?

Bottom of the pendant 30–36 inches above the counter, spaced evenly with at least 24–30 inches between pendants and 6 inches or more from the island edge.

Can you center a light over a table when the ceiling box is off-center?

Yes. We use a swag hook or a canopy with an offset chain so the fixture hangs where you want it without moving the box.

Can you install a light on a vaulted or 12-foot ceiling?

Yes. We bring tall ladders and sloped-ceiling adapters. High and vaulted installs fall in the $125–$165 tier.

What's the difference between damp-rated and wet-rated outdoor fixtures?

Damp-rated fixtures are for covered porches where they will not be hit directly by rain. Wet-rated fixtures can be exposed to rain and are what we recommend for uncovered walls, garages and eaves in New Orleans.

Can you replace my porch light with a motion-sensor light?

Yes, on the existing box. We mount it, then set the range, sensitivity, on-time and dusk-only mode.

Do you install dimmers or smart switches?

Yes, as an add-on to the fixture install when a switch already exists in that location. Make sure the bulbs are dimmable if you want a dimmer.

Do you supply the fixture or do I buy it?

You choose and buy the fixture so you get exactly the style you want. Text us the link or a photo first and we will confirm it fits your box, ceiling height and location.

How long does it take?

Most single fixtures take 30–60 minutes. Chandeliers, island pendant runs, high ceilings and flood-light arrays take 60–120 minutes.

What if the old box is cracked or loose?

We replace or re-secure a damaged box as part of the install. A cracked box or a box that is not rated for the fixture weight moves the job into the next pricing tier.

Can you install ceiling fans in the same visit?

Yes. Fans and light fixtures are often booked together and each additional item is discounted. See our ceiling fan installation page for fan pricing.
